A DIGITAL MUSE
Synth Aria is an abstract story about an A.I. machine learning how to write a song. We were most interested in visualizing the machine's learning process. Synth Aria is a fantastical and abstract view of the machine’s inner workings and the story of its own curious muse. The end result was visual aria.
VISUAL DEVELOPMENT
The style of Synth Aria is precise, mechanical, whimsical and organic. We created visual abstractions of wave forms, music clips and analogue synthesizers to tell a story of layered musical creation. Vibrant colors are used to describe the tone, temperature and feeling of the various instruments.
BEHIND THE SCENES
Our goal is to create visually distinct moments that are thematically related. The rhythmic expression of music is made by adding layers of motion that feel complex. We made a diverse set of gestures that convey different aspects of the music, from rhythm and intensity, to how each note finds its place in the melody.
We sought to achieve complexity through simplicity. Our basic gesture here is a spiral which serves as a skeleton for the composition. Every element we add supports this spiral gesture while adding a layer of complexity to the image. We add light to create depth, add schematic white lines to accentuate the spin and colored motion trails that symbolize the passage of a melody.
Our other guiding principle was theme and variation. We took the same visual elements designed variations around these elements. The result is a fluid and natural connection between moments while keeping the gestures spontaneous and unexpected.
