A Day with ADHD shows us, from the first person view, what it feels like to live with ADHD. A blend of 2D and 3D techniques, this piece brings to life the story of someone who struggles with constant distractions while discovering an understanding of themselves and where they can find help.
Our challenge: Create a relatable first person experience while also balancing a sense of alienation from the environment and the events. This tension became the basis for our design. We accentuated this conflict by taking everyday tasks and finding ways to make them harder and more distracting. This project was accomplished entirely in house; from the first designs and production to the music and final touches.
Our design came with a set of considerations meant to convey the experience of ADHD. Harsh contrasting colors stand out from the muddy sameness of neutral grays in the background. These colors draw our attention to key objects until we can’t focus on anything else. This skewed color space represents the imbalance of attention and how mundane things can take outsized importance.
2D backgrounds were drawn and projected through a 3D camera which was animated as if it was a person's head looking around the environment. 2D animated hands were then drawn on top of the moving camera to interact with key distractions and objects. These backgrounds were massive.
Traditionally animated effects give an imperfect and human touch. This gave a tangible experience between the interactions of the character and the background. We focused less on realism and more on the icon of the object and how it moved. Water and smoke were bubbly and simple shapes while the final vortex swallowed every asset we had in the piece.
A warped, first person perspective gives us a floating, groundlessness while an absence of faces makes it hard to connect with the people around the character. Red gives us a primary path through the piece, as we follow each chain of distractions to the next scene. What transpires are the events of one day, with ADHD.
